During the War my mother and father used to take the family photograph albums into the Anderson Air Raid shelter when we went into it at night so that they would be safe if the house got bombed. One night about the time of the destruction of Coventry, bombs were whistling quite close. Dad thought that one of these may well hit the shelter and kissed my mother a fond farewell鈥hankfully we were not hit..
About the same time (I was about seven) my father used to carry me back to the house to bed. When the all clear went one night we were half way up the garden and he had a bad attack of lumbago. Mother was left to carry me and father crept the rest of the way on all fours.
