At the beginning of the war I was evacuated to Warwick from Derby, but when we got there no one was expecting us so we were evacuated again to----Chellaston! Actually it was just as well as the place we went to in Warwick had an incendiary bomb there soon after we left.
When I was old enough I went into the RAF and after 3 weeks active service peace was declared and I came home. I was in Derby Market Place in my brand new uniform when a band of youths grabbed me and marched me round shoulder high – just like a hero.
I then went to Japan and found myself billeted with two people from Derby; I found this amazing, as all through my training I had never come across anyone from my hometown.
