Grandad flew in the Royal Army Flying corp and was involved in Operation Market Garden as well as the invasion of Normandy. He was attached to the Canadian Division and as such tended to report directly to the Canadian Generals with information on troop movements and dispositions. He flew an unarmed Auster aircraft and had to escape as best he could if an armed plane was after him. He trained with the Royal Artilary and "spotted" for the guns. The shells would go whizzing over his plane with a loud whoosh and he would radio back to tell them where they landed. It was very dangerous. Sometimes he used to drop supplies for spies. Once he had to rendezvous with a resistance fighter in Holland. When he flew to the spot in this very flat country all he could see was a policeman on a bicycle on a dyke waving to him. He dropped the supplies over the side of the plane and the Policeman saluted, collected the things and rode off on his bike - a very brave man, grandad often wondered if he survived the war. .
