In 1941 I was home on leave from the Airforce in Carrickfergus, which was near to Belfast.
In the evening there was a large air-raid. We watched in horror as Belfast went up in flames. My Father was on night shift in Harland and Wolfe, so we were particularly worried about him.
There were naval ships in the harbour and they sailed out towards us across the Lough hit and on fire. However the ship's guns did bring down a German plane full of bombs which crashed near us blowing us back against the wall of our bungalow. Over 200 people died.
Fortunately my Father survived, but his shoes had been burnt off and his eyebrows singed.
