I was stationed in Nevis, an island next to St Kitts in the West Indies. One day the local doctor came to our camp to alert the commander that a German U-boat was in Nevis harbour. We all went out in full battle dress to the harbour - it would have been the first time that we would have seen action. But by the time we got there the U-boat had been and gone. I was very diappointed.
