This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from Reading on behalf of Albert Bargeman and has been added to the site with his permission. Albert Bargeman fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

After we came back from Victoria (Canada), where we鈥檇 been billeted after our boat sank, we went back to Egypt.

We were stationed at Tobruk, where they were shelling the harbour. Our job was running oil up there, and we got shelled coming in and bombed coming out. Fortunately they missed, but there was shrapnel coming down on the deck. We thought we鈥檇 pick it up for souvenirs, and when I did it, I managed to burn my hands, it was that hot.
