This story is about two brothers called Brian aged 6 and Reg aged 10. In the end of 1940/41 the two brothers were evacuated from Hackney, north London as the bombing was so servere. their mother and father thought it would be a good idea for them to be evacuated to the countryside. Together, they were taken to the railway station with their little suitcases and their gasmask. There were lots of other children there, all different ages and size. There they got ID tags pinned on their shirt. Thn they were sorted into groups and taken to their train. The children had little or no idea where they would be going apart from somewhere quiet and remote. All the children thought it would be a great adventure. The two brothers got on their train. Brian had never been on a proper steam train before.they were soon on their way to the countryside. After a couple of hours on the train, they stopped at a station in Norfolk where they were sorted into groups and sent to a big hall where they waited for the coaches to take them to their destination. Once on the coach they headed off to a small village called geldeston. The village had 1 school, about 20 houses, a village store and a pub. They first saw the people they were going to be staying with in the school hall. The two brothers were placed with Mr and Mrs Gurmain. She was quite round and he was quite tall. The cottage they were taken to was very small. one bedroom downstairs and two upstairs. The only source of light was a few oil lamps. The toilet was in a shed at the bottom of the garden. Mr Gurmain worked on the railway and went to work on his bike. The first few months were strange for the 2 brothers. They used to chase and catch rabbits and help out with the harvest. they used to go fishing and swimming in the river. Their used to be many planes that flew over the village because there was a RAF base nearby. The two brothers mother and father would come down and stay in the pub. In 1944 they were sent back to hackney to her mother and father.
