This story was submitted to the People's War Site by Margaret Walsh of The Royal Star and Garter Home on behalf of John Groom and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I joined up in March '43. I went to Newfoundland as a telegrapher. While I was on a frigate in the Atlantic I met a chap named Norton, who showed me drawings of the mechanisms of a motorbike. [The Norton motor bike was well-known subsequently]. After that he disappeared and I never saw or heard from him again. I don't know whether his ship was struck by a torpedo or U boat.
