When the sirens sounded the air raid, we used to be rushed in our siren suits, to my Aunties home nearby, she and a neighbours cellar had been knocked into one large room, and within there were cots, bed and a paraffin heater. Salford docks was getting a real battering and it was around christmas as i remember,we had to remain below for two nights running, but as a fabulous treat upon our emergence we had lovely boiled eggs and soliders for our breakfast.
On another night, we followed our usual proceedure of dashing to Aunties cellar, however this time, after the all clear sounded and we came up into the daylight, we discovered we had no home anymore. Our house and a number of others had turned into rubble. Fortunately for us, we had family in the area - the aforementioned Auntie, and a Grandma with whom we could stay until a new home was found. However, we were unable to salvage any belongings and literally had the clothes that we were stood in.
