My father was one of the lead tanks in this battle, driving into town as the German tank hiding behind the external bar of a bar crashed through the wall and started firing on them. He was always adamant that unlike the film, the Americans were nowhere near the first wave of the assault! A case of Hollywood's famous imagination? In later years, I made a friend who's father strangely was in exactly the same place at the same time as my father at MonteCasino. He however was infantry and says he could never decide whether he loved or loathed the tanks. "They would draw the fire you see, but then again, they were perfect for us to hide behind!"
