This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Chris Comer of Stockport Libraries on behalf of "Nick"and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

‘Nick’ was about eleven years old and living in Gorton during World War Two. He remembers his father making a bed under the stairs for him and his brother to shelter in during the blitz. They also had a shelter at the back of the house that the neighbours also used when raids were particularly bad.

Nick was given the job of collecting rations for the whole family from the local grocery shop and he always got a cake whilst he was waiting as queuing could take a couple of hours as other people often got served first. He only got meat to eat occasionally.

At one point Nick was evacuated to Bramhall with some other children from his school. He slept three to a room with his brother and another girl. They were not allowed to go through the front door and were only allowed in the front parlour when their parents visited – for the most part they had to stay in the kitchen. They spent a lot of time listening to the radio.

They didn’t really like this and only stayed for a couple of months.
