at the time of the rhine crossing, i was sitting in the living room, of our house in luton, with my parents, just after lunch. there sudenly came the sound of aircraft, a great many aircraft. these were presumably on their way to take part in the airbourne assult. the noise grew louder and louder and filled the air. all of a sudden there was a huge, drawn out crash from upstairs. my parents shot upstairs to ascertain the cause! in my bedroom we had a large tall cupboard with many shelves, which was used to store my mothers kilner jars containing all the previous seasons fruit for the coming year. the vibration from the transport aircraft engines had been so great, that it had dislodged the top shelve, which had bought down every shelve in the cuboard. apart from the mess, this was a serious loss when food was short! i of course thought it was hilarious and whent outside to watch the aircraft still going over to germany.
