When war broke out on Sunday September 3rd, I was 11 years old. At that time we still had the scholarship exam and I had passed it and was waiting to start at Wisbech high School for Girls. My main worry was whether I would still be able to go. I was and when I arrived we had to practice air raid drill. The school had enormous grounds with a small wooded area to the left of the building which we called the copse. They dug a small trench there and when the warning sounded, we had to go outside and sit in the trench.
War in East Anglia was fairly uneventful, but I vividly remember an incident when i was 17. I was going out with an American serviceman at the time and he was stationed in Wendling, Norfolk. One evening he was walking me home when we looked up and saw a German aircraft flying very very low and in the process of dropping several incendiary bombs. To see them leave the plane really was an awesome sight and very frightening. I lived right beside the London- NorthEastern railway line and I suspect that this was the target. One of the bombs landed in the house next door, 47 Milner Road, and fell between the beds of two young children.... and it didn't go off!! We couldn't believe our luck.
