Opposite the church in Bromfield there was a field that had a Shetland pony in it. We called him Titch. Before the war, we kids used to give this pony sweets which he loved. Of course, with a war on, there were no sweets and Titch really missed them. He would put his hooves on the wall at the edge of the field and cry out for them. So my mum went to the chemist and bought some Ex-Lax, which tasted sweet and she鈥檇 break them into little pieces on her hand and feed them to Titch who loved them. It never seemed to do him any harm!
