Staffordshire County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.

I was eight years old when the war started. I lived in a little village called Talke Pitts. I had a brother in the air force and a brother in the army. Everybody knew each other in our village. I went to Talke School. The girls that could knit had two classes a week knitting socks for the airmen. We knit the socks on four needles - all sizes. It was our little war effort.
I remember our family kept pigs, geese and hens. We kept pigs for the Ministry but were allowed to keep one pig for our own use.
We didn't have Anderson shelters - we used to go down the cellar instead. We just got on with things........it was just a way of life. We knew we couldn't do anything about it so we just accepted it.
