I had to leave the train at Stepney because of an unexploded bomb at Fenchurch Street. I was determined to walk to Bond St where I worked, to see if everyone was alright.
As I came off the station, four streets had been completely bombed to the ground. One old lady was sitting on the side of the street holding a picture frame containing a poem 鈥 鈥 From ghoulies and ghosties and things that go bump in the night, please Lord preserve us.鈥 I stayed with her for half an hour, talking to her and cuddling her. When I went to leave her, she gave it to me. It was her only possession and I have treasured it to this day.
When I got to the Bank, the whole road was covered in pipes and hoses. I was so proud of our firemen who worked all night long to put out the fires. Their faces were black and all you could see were the whites of their eyes.
When I got to Pemberly鈥檚 Fur Store in Oxford St., fur coats were strewn all over the road and the road had been closed by the Police. But nobody touched the furcoats.
When I got to work at 2.30 (I had caught the 7.32am!), everyone was very surprised to see me. I was sent home again immediately and got home at 8pm!
