I started work at 14. I was a mailing boy at Connaught House in London. The company
was Standard Telephones and Cables.
At 16 you were sent to the factory and I
eventually became an apprentice.
Before I was 17 I had joined the Local
Defense Volunteers which became the Home Guard [Dads Army]. The unit that I joined
was attached to the L.N.E.R. the London and
North Eastern Railway. One of the tasks
allotted to this unit was to mount an
armed guard at the northern end of a tunnel.
During one particular day I had won a pocket watch in an office raffle.
That night while on duty in our guard hut,the sentries changed and one of the lads coming off duty pointed his rifle at the watch that Corporal Peter Naylor, had hung on the wall and said wouldn't it be funny if this was loaded and BANG the watch disappeared through the wall causing a big laugh from the off duties members who had been playing cards.
The watch that I had won that morning then
was sold to the member who fired the shot
and replaced Peter Naylors watch.
At this time during the war we had I remember only about 6 rifles between us
and very few bullets.
