In 1940 I lived in Ramsgate with my mother, about 50 yards from the harbour. At the time of Dunkirk we saw many troops coming ashore.

My mother bought lots of cigarettes and took me to the station, where she lifted me up to the carriage door, and I passed the cigarettes through the window to the troops inside. I can see their haggard faces now in my mind's eye. I heard somebody behind me say, "Poor devils." I couldn't understand why these brave soldiers were being described as devils. This struck me very forcibly, and the scene has remained with me ever since.
