i remember that my first memory of the war was coming out of my house at night, during the blitz,in the pitch black dark, because there were no street lights and all the windows were blacked out. I looked southwards, and the whole sky was red, and because i was so young, only 6 at the time, i found it very scary, because everywhere else was pitch black. You could hear the bombs and AA guns, and see the huge searchlights looking for the german bombers.
My other memorys is where i lived, our back garden joined a narrow field, owned by the railway, the army had installed a massive anti-aircraft gun, which used to go off every night, and it used to shake the house madly because it was so loud. it made me frightened to go to bed
Another memory is when we used to live near de havillands, that was a main target for the german bombers, so the used to used to use loads of barrage balloons to throw the germans off thier target, also they used a small airfield at panshanger about 4 miles north of de havillands, what they'd do is fill up this airfield with loads of de havilland mosquitos to try and lure the bomber away from the factory and bomb panshanger instead, however, the aircraft they used were only dummies, so the bombers would have to go back to france without hitting anything useful. The airfield itself is now used a a flying school and my grandson now is learning to fly there!
the war certainly gave me a lot of memories i can look back to, but i just hope that we dont have to go through anything like this again.
