My great Grandmother was born in 1902 into poverty in the 'Park district' which was located in Sheffield city centre. From the age of 8 she worked as a school cleaner.
At the outbreak of the Second World War she was moved from school cleaning in Hillsborough to be a cleaner in the Sheffield Tax offices on Leopold Street in the city centre.
On the night of the Sheffield Blitz Evelyn was still working cleaning the offices when the Blitz started. Evelyn and other staff were evacuated down to the cellars underneath the Tax Office for safety.
After a long night not knowing what was happening to the Sheffield that they knew eventually in the early morning they were allowed out of the cellar to be greeted by devastation and fires caused by the intense bombing that had taken place during that long night.
The one thing that always stuck in Eyelyn's mind from this fatefull event was the fact that her first thought when leaving the cellar at the tax office that morning was "where's that little suit and a lovely little hat?" that was on display in a little clothes shop that was located across the road from the Education Offices in Sheffield which she admired daily on her way to work.
Unfortunately for Evelyn the shop and all its contents including "that little suit and a lovely little hat" had been destroyed by the bombing that had taken place during the night.
This is one of my Great Grandmothers memories of the Sheffield Blitz.......
