Call up 41 Winchester - Yorkshire. Chippenham. Landing D-Day 44, "Le Aktel" Normandy. Was attached to 8th Armoured Brigade. Had engagements through N.WE finishing a Brettonharven Germany 45. Fought in the battle of Radray the breakout around Carne. Protecting the banks of the Tynside Scottish. My weapon in Normandy was the P.I.A.T, our first objected was the church at Tessel Wood. On fighting in the cemetary I was told there was about 10 panthers close by and the officer told me to deal with them. I mention that there was one close by and going across the track to get in posititon I wouldn't have a chance, he disagreed with me and said they wasn't that close, with which he took around the corner of the church wall with which the German tank commander shot a burst which knocked his helmet off, marking the wall also with rackashy. they are there to this day. Myself and Vets visit every year. Eventually I had ago at a tank without success. The PIAT was the most unreliable weapon.
