WARTIME MEMORIES
Brian Marshal
I was 8 years old when the war started, I can remember the smell of the gas masks.
I also remember the big Air Raid shelter in Cedar Road, and the Anderson Shelter in our back garden.
My brother and myself were walking to school at Woodfield, when we saw our first Australians marching up Low Road, singing 'Waltzing Matilda', I used to wonder how many went home.
We saw Catalina Flying Boats, also Sunderland Flying Boats.
The Flying Fortress was a big bomber, badly damaged they could fly on two engines.
The night the land mines were dropped we watched our school win the school shield at football.
That was the last time I saw my best friend George Webb, he was eating bread and jam. Our school was badly damaged, we had extra time on our holiday.
