During the 1960鈥檚, when the children had flown the nest, I became heavily involved with my local branch of the British Red Cross, and in time, after a variety of activities and courses, I attained the rank of Divisional Welfare Officer. A spin-off from this was to visit the Society's headquarters at Geneva.
This had to be a personal pilgrimage, so several of us arranged a Swiss holiday and travelled to Geneva by boat and train. We certainly saw quite a lot of the countryside, but the big event was calling at the magnificent headquarters building.
Despite no advance warning having been given, we were made extremely welcome and given an absorbing guided tour. The POW Records Office was spellbinding by its size, yet when I asked if I could see the file relating to my brother-in-law, Geoffrey Broom, a naval prisoner-of-war, it was placed in my hands within five minutes, and this, nearly 46 years later.
