Whilst I was in North Africa,I was stationed on a farm in charge of 6th Signals Artilary.During a lull in fighting I ordered the guns to be checked and cleaned all except one fully manned. While this was going on,the Germans decided to strike taking out our only means of defence.
The Germans were attacking the town of Cassarean. We took up a forward position as our Guards Brigade advanced,to push the Germans away from the town. The C.O advised us that our guns were now out of range,so we had to pull back. This was the time to relax stand down and enjoy our rations. We were sat in a hollow when I heard a rustling in the bushes nearby.I ordered my men to load their rifles, crouch on their bellies and wait till you see the whites of the enemies eyes, before opening fire.Just at that I heard the drawl of the Americans who shouted Americano's.Their leader got a right earbashing off me,saying they were nearly shot. They were a body recovery team.
While still in North Africa we had a chicken we called Nellie which produced one egg every day but when an air-raid was on it would produce two which made us laugh.
I was part of the final assault of Cassino and the British were billeted in a nearby Church Crypt for up to ten days before the battle. It was cramped eating and sleeping in there, with a bucket for a toilet.
Field Marshal Alaxander ordered a full front assault so on the 11th of May at eleven o'clock,11,000 rounds of ammunition were used in the assault,a scene which I felt was both deafening and awsome, something I will never forget.
