鈥淚 definitely remember being annoyed because the Japanese surrendered while we were on holiday. It was in August and we had made a bonfire on the beach: because we were so annoyed with Hirohito, we burnt (an effigy) of Hitler all over again. Imagine surrendering in the school holidays! It was completely different on VE day: then we were given a day off; I remember that we all went for a bicycle ride, with flags flying on the front of your bikes, followed by a bonfire at night-time.鈥
