The Americans and English came to Naples in 1944 landing in Salerno — because if they landed in Naples they would destroy the port. But they got stuck, they went as far as Monte Cassino Monastery which was on top of a mountain. They were stuck at the bottom of the Germans at the top of the mountain.

Monte Cassino Monastery was not invaded or bombed as they didn’t want to harm the monks. This went on sometime until they (USA) eventually bombed the Germans. There were five days of fighting where the Germans were inside the city and the Allies were trying to take Naples. The Neopolitans helped the Allies to win Naples back.
