This is the story of Alexander Hutchinson who served on HMS Stockham an American boat taken over by the British Navy as told by him.
I joined Chatham in November 1942,to be met by
a large chap who said here's another one.
We were shown to our bed or (Hammock). First order of the day How to sling your hammock our sleeping accomodation was in the tunnel in Chatham
Chatham being honeycombed with tunnels. It was cold and exteremely damp and with only 5 inches of water to bathe in you were left feeling constantly cold.
The next joy to await us was a round of injections one of the most amusing things to happen was - we all lined up and the doctor was behind the screen. A young boy next to me kept peeping behind the screen and reporting the gory details back to us. He went to go in the curtain when it was his turn and got as far as the curtain then proceeded to faint flat on his face. The doctor not one to let an opportunity pass procced to inject him whist still unconcious.
No health clubs or 'spa's in those days it was a freezing cold dip, lined up on a diving board , and we had to put on a a cold wet sailor suit. Not to ruin many a good suit, the PTI made us wear the same suit pulled off wet by one man then put on wet by the next waiting shivering victim.
