After the retreat of Dunkirk (june 1940) the French Government , defeated , signed an amrmistice with the Nazis, it was the beginning of an awful escalation of French laws against Jewish refugees and French Jews. So in November 1942, the Jews of North Africa helped the task forces to occupy Algeirs(operation 'torch'). Within 3 days , the large harbour of BONE (called ANNABA now)became a key posititon on the route of Gibraltar to the Middle East via Malta. the aim was to stop Rommel and his Afrika Korps and change the course of the war. I was about 6 when i was freed by British troops in BONE(the local Italians had prepared camps to arrest Jews, communists, partonsists;eventualy they turned 'guests' of their proper barbed wires.
At home , we welcomed scores of Britons; for years they came to our home to relax, sing, play the piano, meet...mother(96 now)is still proud of the cigarette burns on the piano:those young pianists saved us from the shoah, from famine; they fed us for months; i was brought up on Fry's cocoa, Mars bars, sandwich paste in tiny tins, oxo soups, Colmans mustard powder, Carnation milk, Bird's custard, Stork margarine, Ceylon tea....The City of the BONE was heavily bombed and years after the war, there were still in view, torpedoed ships in the harbour and off the beaches; they reminded us of the bravery of the MErchant navy. The city of the BONE was awarded the prestigious medal of gallantry and bravey (Legion d'Honeur)
I decided to devote my life to Promte English Culture in the over seas countries. I became a student in English then a Graduate in English and then a teacher of English, then the Head of English Dept in various Lycees; I eventually founded ANGLIA, a well know association to develop exchanges and home stays in Britain, to discover the Britions at home. I am now a pensioner(public service) and recieved the national medal of Educationfor my life's work(Palmes Academiques). I am quite often in Britian and systematically present at Remberance Ceremonies in London to pay my family's tribute and respect to the Vritish Army, R.;R.A.F and special thanks to Martin from Liverpool who was so present to me at home. Thanks to Harold who used to drive me ,everyday at 7am, in his army jeep, when on mission: it was thought that travelling in the open would calm and cure my bad whooping cough.....
