When I was roughly 7 years old we lived in a road of terraced houses in Pimlico, London. One night a bomb was dropped on a warehouse across from our house, it was a Taylor's Depository and had stables at the back. My mother, brother and I stood on the doorstep of our house and watched as the Fire Brigade arrived. My most vivid memory is of the man who lived next door, who was a policeman, rushing out of his house with his son - still in their pyjamas - and breaking down the door to the stables and freeing all the horses and then several men were rounding them up. I don't know what happened to them after that as we were shephereded back to bed, but the sight and sound of those horses gallopping up and down the road remains quite clear in my mind's eye.
