My uncle Joe's story began in Dunkirk where he was serving with the Royal Artillery. He wasn't evacuated, instead he was captured by the Germans and taken prisoner. Together with other prisoners, he was forced to march 200 miles to a POW camp.

He managed to escape from the camp and hid in a farmer's barn. Unfortunately, however, the Germans found him and beat him without mercy. He had terrible scars all over his back and remained a POW until the end of the war in 1945.

When he returned home he told nobody about his appalling injuries. He was very weak when he got home and needed a special diet to build him up.

He kept the details of his treatment at the hands of the Germans a secret for a number of years before finally letting his family know exactly how he had been treated.

He was a very brave man who wanted no fuss made of his experiences.
