I really don't know whether this "story" will be of help or interest but I thought I would jot it down anyway.
I don't have any information about his unit or personal details but my grandfather, Major McKie, was posted in Burma. He never spoke about the war but he did return with some amazing portraits of Burmese "locals". These stunning detailed life drawings were drawn onto old maps as this was only paper the local Burmese artist could obtain. I wouldn't know whether my grandfather provided the maps but I understand that he "bought" numerous pictures with food and cigarettes for payment.
Grandpa didn't really tell us (as children) much about the pictures, but I do remember going with him to buy a puppy. Whether he knew the gentleman concerned or not I don't know, but the man selling the puppies had pictures by the same Burmese artist in his house, and some had been made into a beautiful lampshade!
