Hello this is my story of life in Camden during the war, i stayed home with mum and my little brother, i rembember being bombed out of one home in royal collage street and moving to pratt street, we had a shelter in the back yard with two bunks in but we did not always use it, i remember of sometimes of hiding under the kitchen table with mum and my brother waiting for the all clear. I also have memorey of being in school, st michaels just off of regents park road, when the seren went and we all had to go down to the school cellars that was quite scary for us but the teachers would tell us storys which helped to keep us calm. I remember one day playing in the yard and the seren went i just froze not knowing where to run then mum called out of the window run into the shelter where i stayed untill the all clear. When mum came for me i was crying, after that i would never play outside alone again. Dad was in the fire-service so mum was alone lots of the time with us. But he would tell us some funny storys, like when he went into the loo and a bomb fell some streets away and he got blown into the loo and could not get out without the help of other fireman. Towards the end of the war dad was badly injured when he fell between two fire-engine's damaging his legs so that was the end of his fire-service, but back to the war years, i remember sometimes being hungery as we only had one main meal a day, with food being on ration it was hard for the mothers and they went without them-self to feed their family.some of the treats we had were bread/marge dipped in suger, or cocoa powder and suger all mixed up,with sweets being on ration this was our sweet treat. My aunt got married in the war and she made her wedding dress out of old curtains plus the bridemaides dresses of which i was one, so we did have some happy times too.And when the war was over most streets had parties, and in the evenings everyone went down to Trafalgar square.
