Some of us remember,
The sad dark days of war,
Many people gave their lives
The rich and the poor.
World war Two was very long
Six years of pain
Everyone was so,so glad
When at last peace came.
Our foes strength and fury
was turned upon our land,
through the early days of war
Alone we would stand.
All our youth was ready
And waiting for the call
As one by one o'er Europe
We saw each country fall.
we were warned by leaders
Hard times lay ahead,
blackouts, Air raids, rationing,
Our country must be fed.
The navy sailed the Seven seas,
And brought in food and oil
But loss of ships and waste of life
Made mockery of their toil.
We were told to help ourselves,
Allotments were all planted
"Dig for Victory" the cry
We grew what we wanted.
Every little piece of land
was used to grow our crops,
Not many luxuries for us
Very little in our shops.
brown bread and Margarine
Dried eggs, 2spam", corned beef,
"Snock, Whalemeat and fish galore
and rubbery processed cheese,
food was saved for special days
Fruit was stored with care
"Points became a way of life
But rationing was fair.
Clothes were a problem,
"Coupons" were so few,
Women altered everything,
They knew they must "Make-Do"
Fashion was important
They were smart and up to date,
"snoods", "leg Lines" and make up queues
For all this was the fate.
Soldiers,sailors,airmen,
From around the world,
Uniforms we did not know,
Walking out with the girls.
Languages we hadn't heard,
Customs we found funny,
They were here to help our cause,
Most didn't earn much money.
We still had entertainment,
Dances, Radio shows
Cinemas and Theatres
Some which "Never Closed"
The songs of war were sung by all
many new ones written
Vera Lynn, Ann Shelton, Bob Hope and
Bing,
These were names we knew so well
Their songs we all would sing.
Families of Servicemen
Did their l;oved ones mourn,
Some were taken prisoner
Others casualties of war,
Thoses who did not survive those days
Are much more wiser men,
They fought because they thought it right
Ideas have changed since then.
60 Years have now passed
Since those sad bad days,
Governments and Boundaries
Have changed in many ways
Now we're part of Europe,
Past enemies are friends,
We must all be thankful
and make sure PEACE won't end.
