My sister Joyce was teaching at Cannon Street Primary School during the war. She would do a whole day's teaching and then she would do two night shifts at Hanley Fire Station in Old hall Street.
Joyce would finish at the Fire Station at 6am, rush back home where father would have a cup of tea waiting for her, then she'd grab two hours sleep, get up and go in to school before 9am!!
Not content with two jobs, Joyce also did two evenings per week in the ATC.
Joyce's great love was always netball - she has travelled all over the world with the sport during her teaching career and since she retired. She was recently honoured with the Distinguished Service Award for her services to netball at the grand age of 83!
