Whilst evacuation was meant to protect the children, Letchworth was only 30 miles from my home. During the war only 1 bomb was dropped there and this was on the outskirts; it was said that it was dropped to get rid of it on the way back to Germany.
I spent five happy year sin Letchworth, my foster parents treated me just like my own parents. I have been visiting them regularly since until about five years ago when they passed away. I will always remember them with great affection. During my early days there I remember helping to dig and erect a shelter. We all slept in this initially but as time progressed it was realised that Letchworth was not a troubled spot.
I can honestly say that Letchworth changed my life for the better. When I pass through it now, it brings back memories of making model airplanes out of balsa wood, the good years I spent in the Boy鈥檚 Brigade and my years at Letchworth Grammar School. I also remember listening to all the big bands such as Harry James, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Glenn Miller.
So many happy memories; so lucky to have been evacuated to Letchworth.
