My name is Robert Wood. Called up by the peacetime malitia in May 1939, from my home in Musselburgh, Scotland. Posted to Caterick Camp loose lines to start training with regular army. Our training wasn't completed because war was declared on 3rd September 1939. I was then posted to Whitby with 3rd STB, from there were transferred to Huddersfield, Yorkshire where we were then posted to North Africa with the 27th Searchlight Royal Signals and stationed on the Suez canal area near Moaascar Garrison. I was then posted to Mena Camp near Pyramids, then later sent up to Tubruk. Whilst in Tubruk I transferred to 1st Light Ack Ack, Royal Signals attached, involved with Al Alamen. There was an underground cave in Tubruk which held concerts where we were entertained by ENSA. Our job in Tubruk was to lay communications for the searchlights round Tubruk harbour. Finished back at Suez Canal where we were disbanded approximately 1944. Then posted to 18th Area Signals Moaascar Garrison. Lucky to be chosen on Liap leave (for six weeks)back to England, which was from Port Said to Liverpool on the 'Stirling Castle'. After my leave I was posted back to Port Said and then was sent back again to England because my time was up in the Middle East. I was then posted to Morpeth as an Instructor for a few months until my DEMOB and back to Civvy Street. Names I remember: were
Sgt Crow, L/C Smith, Signaler Bob Sugden,
Les Fowler. Would be really pleased to hear from any of the section.
