This is June Wedlake's story - it has been added by a Volunteer from Crawley 19th Sqdn ATC, with permission from the author, who understands the terms and conditions of adding her story to the website.
All my friends in my class were going swimming after school, but because it was raining they decided to go to the Whitehall cinema instead. I didn't go though, as I had promised an old lady that I would help her at a local fair that afternoon.
While I was at the fair, all my friends were in the cheap seats watching a film at the cinema, and a stray bomber came over East Grinstead and hit the cinema. Most of my school friends were killed in the bombing, but by keeping my promise to that old lady my life was saved. I am now 74 and I still live in East Grinstead.
