Introduction
Joseph Casson from Whitehaven in what was then Cumberland (now Cumbria) was a member of the 9th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He took part in the Normandy Landings and died on 27th June 1944. Joseph was one of the sons of David and Mary Ellen Casson of Woodhouse, Whitehaven, Cumbria. Joseph was 18 years old when he died.
Recognising Joseph鈥檚 鈥楿ltimate Sacrifice鈥
Joseph is buried at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Ryes, Bazenville a short distance to the north-east of Bayeux. His Grave Reference is IV.B.1. Joseph lies next to his brother Robert who also died during the Battle of Normandy on D-Day 6th June 1944. Further information about Joseph and Robert has been posted to this site in stories A3723257, A3879732 and A3879787.
After the war, the Casson family received a commemorative scroll on behalf of the King (George VI) honouring Joseph. Although I have not seen Joseph鈥檚 scroll, I have seen the similar one sent to the family for Robert.
If anyone who served in the Durham Light Infantry with Joseph has further information or any memories about him it would be interesting to hear from them.
I wish to acknowledge the contribution of David Casson, a nephew of Joseph, for sharing his photographs and information about his uncle so that this article can be submitted. The terms of 鈥淭he People鈥檚 War鈥 website have been read and understood.
