Id never seen a banana because of rationing during the war, no one in my school had. Another boy brought a banana in, his father was in the navy and he had given it to him. The banana was passed round all the children in the school so everyone could have a look at it. Because everyone had touched, squeezed and dropped the banana it went soft and squishy. I asked if I could have a piece of his banana but the boy said no. I knew he slept in the afternoons and I saw he had left his banana on his desk while he was asleep, using a needle I put a hole in the banana and sucked the entire banana out of the skin. And when he opened it later the skin just fell away and there was nothing left.

The headmistress at my school was very patriotic during the war and she would not allow any of the children to go to the cinema because they were taking up space that could be used by servicemen. She also threw a party for those children whose fathers were in the armed forces and said she would not allow anyone who鈥檚 fathers were cowards or 鈥渕alingerers鈥 to go to the party.
