We used to have to go to school with a gas mask. I had a Mickey Mouse Gas Mask — every Monday morning we had to call fire drill, which was going to school with your gas mask and spending time in the shelters. Through the blackouts we couldn’t stay out after 9 o’clock as everywhere was dark. There was no light allowed. My Dad was too old to join the forces so was in the home guards — his rifle used to stand next to the door. When the sirens went during the night we used to sleep underneath our metal table. Our parents used to go in the pantry under the stairs — we saw so many buildings destroyed with the stairs still standing.
