Serving in the Med 1943 the ship ordered back to the UK .Apparently since we were low on supplies there was lots of cold room storage available .The supplies officer suggested
Loading up with fruit currently unobtainable in the Uk This included Bananas
We were invited to buy the fruit which we could then take home on leave with us

It was a cold grey day when me and my mate got on the train at Glasgow bound for
Swansea
We boarded the train loaded with our kit along with a hand of ripe bananas ( about 20 - 30 bananas) each
In the compartment was a young lady with 2 small boys after a while the boys started
Whispering and one of them asked me:
鈥淲hat鈥檚 them yellow things鈥 ?
鈥淏ananas鈥 was the reply
鈥 Can you eat them鈥 ?
鈥淵es do you want one鈥 ?
His mum told him not to be cheeky , but he had his banana
We had to tell them to peel them first ,to see their faces light up was a tonic
By the time we arrived at Swansea we had three bananas left
Which my sister ate with the comment 鈥渨here鈥檚 the rest鈥 Well you can鈥檛 win can you !!
