This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from 大象传媒 Essex on behalf of David Haylock during an event at Radwinter, Essex. The story is added with David's permission and he fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
My Dad was a Warden during the War and manned the telephones in the village during air raids. He and my mother related to me an incident that occurred following a raid. A highly suspicious object had been reported in a hedge - the local Home Guard were called out and immediately surrounded and cordoned off the area throughout the night - daylight revealed they had been carefully guarding a discarded Wellington Boot!!
Another tale recounted to me by my Mother also occurred in Helpstead (birthplace of Dick Turpin!) also related to an air raid. During the raid one woman ran from her house and was seen to not have any hair! Although a local resident, no one had ever known that she wore a wig!!
