When the war broke out it was quite frightening for John Sharp as he was only five years old but he found the bombs exciting. John and most of his friends didn't get evacuated, he just got bombed out. A bomb hit near his house but did not do much damage, just a few windows needed repairing. During the war two of John's very close uncles got killed. During the war John lived at 81 Devon Street in Barrow. The air raid siren never went off while he was at school, it was usually at 9.00 pm. It was all right for John in the Anderson shelter because there were bunk beds and his mum brought down sandwiches. The school John went to was very strict, the teachers used to whip them on the hand with rulers and canes. For fun John collected and played with pieces of shrapnel which are bits of bombs, also John and his friends played marbles and football, they also played soldiers in the bombed houses. At weekends John's gran took him to the beach. When John went to London in the car he wasn't allowed out in the morning because bombs were still there. John quite liked the air raids because he didn't have to go to school till 10.00 am.
