This story was told by Nancy McDonald to East Ayrshire Library staff at Darvel World War 2 café day on Saturday 18th June 2005.

I was about 5 when I went to St John’s Hospital and I was in the hospital during the Clydebank Blitz. The nurses pushed the children out into the corridor — 2 to a cot — to protect us from flying glass. My mum was frantic and didn’t want to go to the air raid shelter.

I also remember that all the bombing caused cracking to houses as far away as the Cathkin Braes.

We also had air raid shelters in the playground for safety
