Memory Lane (part two)
During the war years I was still working at the London Laundry, (Stoney Stanton Road Coventry), where I had worked since I left school.
An American Laundry unit was bombed out on the coast so they came to work at the Laundry as they had lost everything, Of cause they helped in our wash house which was really a boost for moral. Every morning when they arrived it was 鈥淗I GIRLS鈥 with gum, chocolate and some times 鈥淣YLONS鈥.
They were very popular with most of the girls, they were stationed at Stoneleigh Abbey and after a few weeks some of us girls would ride out to Stoneleigh in the evenings which was no mean feat after working from 8 till 6 each day. But it had its rewards as when we came home at night they filled our bike baskets with tinned bacon, powdered egg , chocolate, sweets, chewing gum and of cause Nylons. My mother was thrilled as we were on very tight rations. My sister Violet loved the Nylons. The Americans held dances at the Co-op Laundry and they used to treat the girls that went as they had much more money.
The Co-op Laundry was not far away but the Americans always sent a lorry to our laundry to take anyone that wanted to go. I did not dance much in those days I was quite a stay at home girl. Thank goodness, I had already met the boy who lived two doors away who turned out to be the love of my life.
