Marina remembers the first air raid in London. She was only 4 years old. It was one Sunday morning and she was on her tricycle. Suddenly she was all on her own and started screaming. She left the tricycle and ran into Market Street grocery shop.
It was deemed that children should be evacuated to the country. Marina and her sister were packed up ready to go but in the end her mother said, ‘No’, and they stayed in London.
The family home was in a ‘back to back’ terraced house with an Anderson Shelter in the back garden. One night a V1 bomb landed near the shelter.
Her father was in war work and so she did not see him very often.
