I have a very vivid memory of the 2nd World War, particularly the last year. In those days I lived at Heston, Middlesex and where I lived I can remember the flying bombs coming over. We had two in the same road I should think within seven or eight minutes walk of our house. On another occasion I can remember cycling down our road when I heard one coming and I watched it going over. I had a grandstand view of it. I could see the all the flames coming out of the rear of the engine and I had a perfect view of it. About 5 minutes after it had gone over we heard the bang. Fortunately for me it had kept going otherwise I could have been blown up.
On another occasion we had one land at Heston Farm within half a mile of where I lived. It made a quite a tremendous bang. It shook my home quite badly but fortunately it was far enough away to do any damage. I really have very vivid memories of the V1s. I also remember the V2 rockets hitting a factory on the Great West Road. It was the Packard factory. It was only about four miles from where we lived and it came right out of the blue and I am sorry to say that around 45 people were killed at the time - they had no chance.
