When I went to school I used to collect shrapnel. I was evacuated during the war to Rhosmedr near Wrexham with my sister who was a year younger than me. As a 4 and 5 year old we thought they were old — Mr and Mrs Jones. We hated it there — my mother came to collect us and take us home. They gave us tripe to eat.
Back home we were bombed out and had to live with grandparents in Rock Ferry. I remember going to Beechcroft in Whetstone Lane where we heard all the songs I can hear on your tape. Because of rationing my sister and I shared a boiled egg. I remember dried egg — I bought some recently and it was awful.
We went to the exhibition at the Western Approaches it was the original place. It was underground — all those tunnels.
