My years in Alvaston
I would have been seven years of age when World War Two was declared; we lived in Warren Street, Alvaston, Derby.
Our house had a cellar which every night as a family we would spend the night in, in case bombs were dropped nearby on Rolls-Royce and the Railway Works.
On the other side of London Road was Alvaston Park which had anti-aircraft guns, and barrage balloons. Trucks were lined up all down Raynesway on the cycle track, both sides top to bottom. Smoke screens were set up all down London Road. When we went to school we used to run in and out of them.
It was a big thing for a boy of seven/eight to go and see a German plane which had come down on Raynesway.
