A man named George was one person who we questioned, he was 8 years old in 1943, just 4 years after it had begun, he can vaguely recollect the skys exploding with colour as the search lights patrolled the night sky for enemy bombers. His dad was a home guard, a volunteer who was a backup in the event that the country was invaded. He lived very far away though down south so they hardly ever saw him. His two sisters, who attended dances regularly, had very little money, especially when the ration books acme in, and used gravy to paint their legs and eyeliner pencil to draw a line up the back of their legs. The reason for this was that they could not afford nylon stockings to wear; all they hoped was that it would not rain on the night. His mother was a warden, a major figure in society, she would patrol the streets to check that there was no trouble, also she would check the homes and blackout blinds. One hole in the blind and the light would shine through this would be a hazard to the people in the street. One event was to be remembered as a warden came to their door and viciously scolded them for having a pinhole in their blinds. A stream of light could be seen across the road, from one singular candle, and endangered them all.
